The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) is the local governmental authority for land use and protection of the environment, with a main view toward sustainable development. MEPA’s work is aimed at ensuring quality of life in a safeguarded environment, for both present and future communities.
The Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment (MRAE) The Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment has the role of coordinating agricultural and fisheries activities, formulating and implementing policies that promote sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as protect and manage the environment. The Environment division, within the MRAE is responsible for coordinating work within the MRAE relating to the environment, formulating government policy on the environment and disseminating knowledge and awareness concerning the environment.
The Malta Centre for Fisheries Sciences (MCFS) http://www.maltafisheries.gov.mt/index.htm The Malta Centre for Fisheries Sciences is a division within the MRAE. Its function is to regulate and manage local fisheries and the aquaculture industries, as well as other related activities.
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) The Malta Tourism Authority seeks to develop a sustainable tourist industry. The authority aims to reach this objective by issuing licenses and oversees/monitors accommodation and catering establishments, travel and tourism agencies, excursion operators and tourist guides.
The Malta Maritime Authority The Malta Maritime Authority has the responsibility of supervising primary maritime services such that Malta’s standing in this field and associated business activities are enhanced. The Authority’s aim is to promote Malta as a world maritime centre by ensuring that services and facilities offered by all institutions under its control are efficient and cost-effective.
Department of Biology, University of Malta http://home.um.edu.mt/biology/index.html The Department of Biology within the University of Malta offers first degree and postgraduate degree courses. The department also carries out research in various fields of biology with the aim of contributing to the sustainable management of natural resources. Most research is on the marine environment and the main fields of interest include fisheries biology and marine aquaculture, marine pollution and environmental quality, local flora, fauna and ecology, population genetics, biodiversity and conservation.
Nature Trust, Malta http://www.naturetrustmalta.org/ Nature Trust is a local environmental NGO. It’s primary aims are using environmental awareness to conserve nature, managing areas of natural and scientific interest, and promoting effective environmental legislation through lobbying.
Malta Marine Foundation http://www.marinefoundation.org/ The Malta Marine Foundation is an NGO with a primary interest in the marine environment. It’s main objectives are to preserve Malta’s marine habitats through research, exploration and monitoring of biodiversity; to protect existing reefs and wrecks; to create new reefs to enhance breeding of fish or for the purpose of recreational scuba diving; to promote environmental awareness in favor of a healthy ecosystem which a Mediterranean nation depends on; and to promote effective environmental legislation through lobbying.
